Animals of the Passion: Hen and Chicks

Jesus' last public teaching prior to His death (Matthew 23) contains some of the harshest words that Jesus speaks. The image of a hen gathering her chicks however, shows us that Jesus spoke these words not in anger, but in heart-broken love. This message exposes us to the heart of God for His people.

    Woof!

    Take this test!
No bones about it, you're a commanding Pit Bull with a bite as big as your bark. Authoritative and aggressive, the power position is the only one for you — and you never have trouble making that crystal clear. A bit quick-tempered, you can be a little intimidating — though you hardly ever attack unprovoked. Taken aback by our insight? Don't despair! You have several redeeming qualities. Very low-maintenance, you're not one to fall victim to superficiality. You say it like it is and don't waste time playing head games. Just make sure to keep your scowl and growl in check so people can get close enough to notice and appreciate your positive side. Woof!

    John Calvin : Missionary Church-Planter

A great little article by Frank James III shows that contrary to popular opinion John Calvin was very mission-minded. The following excerpt from his article shows how successful Calvin's mission efforts were:
Scholar peter Wilcox has combed the Genevan archives and dusted off some of Calvin's five hundred-year old correspondence. Much to his surprise, Wilcox discovered a treasure trove of material indicating that the last ten years of Calvin's life in Geneva (1555-1564) were preoccupied with missions' Among the dusty tomes were letters written by the Genevan missionaries themselves revealing just how successful they had been. One French church in Bergerac boasted to Calvin:

"There is, by the grace of God, such a movement in our district, that the devil is already for the most part driven out, so that we are able to provide ministers for ourselves. From day to day, we are growing, and God has caused His Word to bear such fruit that at sermons on Sundays, there are about four- to five-thousand people."

Another letter from Montpelier rejoiced, "Our church, thanks to the Lord, has so grown and so continues to grow every day that we are obliged to preach three sermons on Sundays to a total of five- to six-thousand people."

And it gets better. A pastor in Toulouse wrote to the Genevan Consistory: "Our church has grown to the astonishing number of about eight- to nine-thousand souls."

Calvin didn't just plant small fledgling churches; he planted mega-churches that in turn planted more churches. It is difficult to fathom the extraordinary success of these Genevan sponsored missionaries. Even in our modern era, such statistics are unheard of.

The French government became so concerned about all these churches being planted that they sent a letter of protest to the Genevan city council. The Genevan city council responded by saying, "What missionaries?"

Genevan missionaries planted churches in other European destinations. Records indicate missionaries also were sent to Italy; the Netherlands, Hungary; Poland, and the free Imperial city-states in the Rhineland. The late Philip Edgcumbe Hughes, one of the few modern scholars aware of this extraordinary achievement, concluded that Calvin's Geneva was a "school of missions... [and] a dynamic centre of missionary concern and activity."

Animals of the Passion: The Doves

One of the most powerful of all biblical symbols, how do the doves in the story of Jesus clearing the Temple explain His actions and offer us hope? This message looks at the various lessons from Matthew 21:12-17 and focuses our attention on what Jesus came to do for us.

Animals of the Passion: The Donkey

This first in a Lenten series looks at the animals that appear in the last week of Jesus' life. This week we consider what can we learn from the lowly donkey about who we are are what we are to do as people chosen by Jesus.

Everything You Know About The Church Is Wrong (4)

This last message in the series looks at the Principle of Spiritual Readiness. A corollary to the truth that God wants His church to grow, the Principle of Spiritual Readiness states that God will never give the Church more than it is ready to receive. This message based on Isaiah 62:1-10, is a challenge to the Church to do those things to get ready to receive the growth God has promised.

      Atheists Evolved From Chickens?

Ray Comfort of Way of The Master hits the nail on the head with this critique of those who mock Christ and His followers.
My new theory is that perhaps atheists evolved from the chicken, because they not only have chicken characteristics–a head, eyes, mouth, skin, neck, heart, earlobes and legs (homology structures), but they also have the chicken’s tendencies–they are chicken livered. They hang around Christians like annoying little bugs hang around light, trying to inject their poison whenever they can.

If you are an atheist, I hope I’m ruffling your feathers. I want to get under your skin and ask why you don’t have the courage to even whisper to Moslems what you keep shouting at Christians. Prove me wrong. Get onto a Moslem website and tell them that you don’t believe their god exists. Do your little “I don’t believe in Zeus” thing. Tell them they believe a myth. Talk about Mohammed as you do Jesus (use lower case for Mohamed). Do your “I don’t believe in the flying spaghetti monster” thing. Tell them that we weren’t made by a god (lower case), but that they evolved from primates (that will go down well). Also, let them know in no uncertain terms that the Koran is full of mistakes (give some examples), and that their mosques are full of hypocrites.

You wouldn’t dare, because you are chicken-livered. You know that they are not like Christians. Despite the “anonymity” of your little chicken coop, they would come after you to lop off your head. And when they find you, you would fall on your knees and be praying to God for help . . .

Everything You Know About Church Is Wrong (3)

What does the pastor do? Is the pastor responsible for doing all the ministry for the church? Ephesians 4 reminds us that the role of pastor is that of equipping the saints for works of service. Unless pastors and people work together, the work of the church is diminished.

            The "U" in Jesus

Before U were thought of or time had begun,
God stuck U in the name of His Son.

And each time U pray, you'll see it's true,
You can't spell out JesUs and not include U.

You're a pretty big part of His wonderful name,
For U, He was born; that's why He came.

And His great love for U is the reason He died.
It even takes U to spell crUcified.

Isn't it thrilling and splendidly grand He rose from the dead,
            with U in His plan?

The stones split away, the gold trUmpet blew,
and this word resUrrection is spelled with a U.

When JesUs left earth at His upward ascension,
He felt there was one thing He just had to mention
'Go into the world and tell them it's true

That I love them all - Just like I love U.'
So many great people are spelled with a U,
Don't they have a right to know JesUs too?

It all depends now on what U will do,
            He'd like them to know,
But it all starts with U.

Everything You Know About Church Is Wrong (2)

This message looks at the the fact that the church isn't for us...the church is us. To get to the heart of what Jesus says in Mark 10:45, we must move from a consumer mindset (what's in it for me) to a servant mindset (what can we do for others), if the church is to do God's will in the world.

                The Self-Indulgent Church?

                From Christian Today:

A cutting-edge church leader in the US known for his innovative ideas on reaching a post-modern generation for Christ contends that the reason why churches are declining in America is because they are self-centered.

“My primary assessment would be because American Christians tend to be incredibly self-indulgent so they see the church as a place there for them to meet their needs and to express faith in a way that is meaningful for them,” said cultural architect Erwin McManus, lead pastor at Mosaic Church in Los Angeles, to The Christian Post on Monday.

“There is almost no genuine compassion or urgency about serving and reaching people who don’t know Christ,” he added.

While I might not agree with his solution to the problem, I am in agreement with McManus' assessement.

                Welcoming God

This first sermon of 2008 looks at the biblical character of Obed-Edom (1 Chronicles 13:14) and asks how can we receive the blessing he did this coming year.

Obed-Edom welcomed the Ark of God into his home following the failed attempt to by David to bring the Ark into Jerusalem. Scripture says that the Ark remained with Obed-Edom for three months and God blessed him and his household.

It Don't Mean A Thing If You Ain't Got The Bling!

After many years of runner-up status (including this year's second place finish in the NFL.com league) I have finally finished on top winning the New Jersey Giants league at ESPN.com! Sure in the grand scheme of things it is meaningless, but still allow me to bask for a few moments in my faux glory.

                      2008

Another year is dawning, dear Father, let it be
In working or in waiting, another year with Thee.
Another year of progress, another year of praise,

Another year of proving Thy presence all the days.

Another year of mercies, of faithfulness and grace,
                      Another year of gladness in the shining of Thy face;
                      Another year of leaning upon Thy loving breast;
Another year of trusting, of quiet, happy rest.

Another year of service, of witness for Thy love,
Another year of training for holier work above.
Another year is dawning, dear Father, let it be
On earth, or else in Heaven, another year for Thee.

                        Christmas 365

Is it possible to maintain the Christmas spirit 365 days a year? Luke 2:15-20 offers us some suggestions on how we can know the peace, love and joy of this season year round by telling ourselves and others the Good News, by treasuring the god-periences we have had and taking the heart of Christmas back into our ordinary days.
