The Written Word - Literally...

News-Leader.com has the amazing story of a man who spent 4o years copying the Bible by hand.Vernon Henson began as an eighteen year old soldier hand-copying the Gospel of Matthew and eventually ended up with the whole Bible in five bound volumes. Over the course of those 40 years he memorized large portions of the Scriptures.
The News-Leader reports:
Talking about his 40-year project, he recalled a joke on him.
He was helping with a Bible quiz program when he overheard two women talking about King David's son Absalom. They both agreed that Absalom was killed by hanging from a tree when his hair became entangled.
Henson, unable to let the misinformation go, told them that, actually, Joab killed Absalom with three javelins while he was hanging in the tree.
One woman ran to the Bible to check out the story. When she discovered that Henson was correct, she said she was impressed.
The other woman wasn't surprised, exclaiming: "Well, Vernon wrote it. He ought to know!"

"Avoiding The Summer Slump"

We are entering what is commonly called in the church "The Summer Slump," where attendance, giving and commitment begin to wane until the Fall. But this Summer does not have to be that way, Proverbs 10:8 reminds us that the season of Summer can be one of opportunity, growth and service.

Cut The Calories...Save A Child

From Leadership Wired:
Consider these sobering statistics:
• Two of three Americans are overweight.
• One child dies of hunger in the world every four seconds.
To feed a starving child for a year costs roughly $200, about the same amount the average American spends each year on soft drinks. By simply passing up soda, Americans could cut child hunger by 75% worldwide.

Ready! Aim! Father!

God is calling today's Christian fathers to be warriors. Part of that calling relates to how we raise our children. Psalm 127:4 likens our children to arrows and like arrows, fathers need to shape, aim and release their children to fulfill God's purposes.

Wine of Astonishment

We have lost our sense of awe. We have become so desensitized by the mass media that it takes greater and greater acts of immorality, increasing violence and insanity to shock us. Sadly this sense have entered the church as well. This message hopes to recapture the staggering truth represented in the Lord's Supper that Christ gave himself for us.
